CMA Booster Club Minutes - 04/13/10

Minutes from last night's CMA Booster Club meeting are as follows:

  • Speaker scheduled for May needs to be cancelled due to officer elections.

  • Gift ideas for Mrs. Martin should be sent to Susan Carson.

  • Senior Scholarships — In the past, we have given $500 scholarships. It was suggested that we give two $1000 scholarships instead. It was decided to provide five $500 scholarships. Dawn motioned to approve, and it was seconded. Vote passed; no objections. A committee will be put together to review the applications.

  • Treasurer's Report — The balance on April 12, 2010 was $6,394.01. We owe Melissa Ripley $212.49 for the Awards Banquet invitations, which will leave a balance of $6,181.52.

  • CMA Patches — We would like to purchase 50 patches at $24 each. If we charge $15 per patch, CMA Booster Club will cover the rest.

  • Computer Update — Microsoft Office software has been received, and we only had to pay half-price for it. Matthew Carson is working with Darryl Brown to create a ghost image, which can then be applied to each laptop. Susan has been working on a parallel plan for a cabinet to house the laptops. She has located a used cabinet that might work. Tom Rayermann brought a proposal/plan by for his Eagle Scout project to build the cabinet. Susan will review.

  • Banquet Update — Update was sent out via email. Comments should be sent to Susan.

  • Bylaws — Slate of officers will be sent out next week. We would like to amend the bylaws to add three new positions because the roles are too large, and it will allow more families to be involved. The proposed amendments were sent out via email. We would also like to add a December meeting and delete a June meeting. Bylaw changes were passed around. Cathy moved that we amend the bylaws, and John seconded. Vote passed, and there were no objections. The slate of officers will be voted on in the May meeting. People who are interested in being on the Board next year should contact Dawn Schindler.

  • Student Update by Alex Holcomb — The AP Survival Kits are still being sold. Interested parents should contact Rebeccah Gould. The money goes to the student account under Mrs. Martin. The AP Survival Kits are only for CMA students. Dawn suggested that next year, the students may want to open it up to all AP students, and that the booster club would be happy to assist. Susan said that it could also be coordinated with the AP Booster Club.

  • Meeting was adjourned for the scheduled speaker, Dr. Wheeler.

A $500 deposit was made to the Marriott for the Awards Banquet. We only have enough money to sponsor one $500 scholarship because we need to pay for the Microsoft licenses.

  • Cruise Update — Mrs. Martin said that there will be a meeting on March 3rd at 6 p.m. in her room (CSHS 414). The travel agent is sponsoring dinner. At approximately 6:45, she will address last minute questions, paperwork and notarized forms. There will be two education-related activities during the cruise. They will tour the Disney infirmary and will deliver donations to the Rotary Club President in Nassau for Haiti. Susan said that she thought that the Southlake Rotary Club may assist.

  • Nominating Committee for 2010-2011 Board Positions — Susan will put together the committee by the next meeting in March. She needs volunteers from all class years as well as one current Board member. After the committee is put together, it will be run by Dawn Schindler as Parliamentarian. The slate will be announced in April, and elections will be held in May.

  • Fundraising — Amy discussed potential dates for the Sonic fundraiser. Volunteers are needed to help with the event. Alex Holcomb will discuss with the students. We need 12-15 students to work two four-hour shifts on February 27th. Students will get community service hours. Amy said that we do need to leave a $100 deposit, which is refundable when we show up.

Ximena Peryea also suggested an Easter portrait fundraiser. Amy will discuss options with Ximena and propose a package.

  • Student Board Meeting — The student board meets at 3:45 on the Wednesday after the Booster Club meeting.

  • Awards Banquet — The Awards Banquet will be held on May 21st, and the deposit has been made. Melissa Ripley will be heading up the committee.

  • Professionals Breakfast/Career Day — Mrs. Martin said that if school is cancelled, we will need to cancel the Professionals Breakfast and Career Day. If CISD has a delayed start, the Professionals Breakfast/Career Day will also need to have a delayed start. If CISD has early release, we will also need to have early release. Professionals will be notified by email.

  • Computer Cabinet — The Eagle Scout is working on the cabinet. Susan is waiting to hear back from Dr. Strike on the software.

  • Chamber of Commerce Student Presentation — Mrs. Martin and Alex made a presentation to the Chamber of Commerce on Monday about CMA because the Chamber was interested in learning more about the program. Alex will be attending Baylor in the Fall, and she applied for one of five automatic admissions to medical school. She relayed to the Chamber of Commerce that her internship and classroom experience were key in getting her to the interview stage at Baylor. Mrs. Martin also took letters from graduates to show the Chamber.

  • Speaker: Dr. Wayne Hebert on Designated Doctor Program — Dr. Hebert began his career as a chiropractor in Southlake. He practiced for 25 years before retiring to start a management company, which manages Designated Doctors. Designated Doctors are physicians, surgeons and chiropractors who are assigned by the State of Texas to review injury-at-work cases to evaluate and determine levels of impairment and disability for Worker's Compensation claims. There were more than 50,000 work-related injuries in Texas last year. Serving as a Designated Doctor is a great way to supplement income or pay back medical school loans because State law requires 100% reimbursement of expenses and charges.

  • Laptop Cabinet Update — Mrs. Martin said that John Kresky brought an Eagle Scout by to take measurements for the cabinet.

  • Funding — Mrs. Martin will be meeting with us in the near future to discuss specific project needs requiring funding.

  • Internship Shirts — The seniors have already ordered their shirts for the internships. Alex believes that it was opened up to sophomores and juniors, too. They ordered black Polo-style shirts with white stitching and charged $20 each. The Boosters were also working on a shirt design, but we will use our's for the sophomore/junior summer internship program and possibly sell them at the Awards Banquet as a fundraiser. Dawn asked to see pictures of both shirts. Susan will contact Rebeccah Gould regarding shirts.

  • Professionals Breakfast — Long and Melissa want to meet with Mrs. Martin to review the format for the breakfast.

  • Speaker — Mrs. Martin is giving students an extra daily grade for attending the presentation tonight. She asked Natalie to do a sign-in sheet.

  • Minutes — Dawn motioned that the minutes from the November meeting be approved, and Long seconded.

  • Treasurer's Report — The current balance is $2,042.32. We will have expenses for Office 2003 of approximately $400, and we need to pay Mrs. Martin for the cruise for approximately $900, which can be paid when we're ready. The grant application for Southlake Women's Club has been completed and submitted. The CMAB income taxes have been filed and accepted by the IRS.

  • Great Wolf Lodge — We only had 20 students sign up, and the drop dead date is Friday. Therefore, we're going to cancel this event, and we will have a post-mortem to go through the details. We'd like a student rep to participate in the post-mortem meeting. Gay did an awesome job negotiating this and getting it set up. Alex will address the event with the students at the next meeting to ascertain feedback about the lack of participation. If parents have any feedback, please provide it to Gay. The post-mortem committee will provide a report at the next meeting. Susan will contact the students for a representative for the post-mortem committee.

  • Mentor/Mentee Program — Natalie needs the parent class reps to take over the mentor/mentee program since she is swamped. She said that the junios/seniors would like a meeting at CSHS. Community service hours are granted to the mentors, and the students all appreciate the food, both of which draw them in. She'd like to see more junior/senior particiption, and it was suggested that the upperclass members go to CHS. Natalie moved to put the program under the purview of the parent class reps, and have them report status to her as the Internship VP. Dawn seconded the motion. Natalie will contact the class reps to begin turnover.

  • CMA Recognition at Commencement — CMA students are not identified in the graduation program. Susan will follow up with Mr. Rhodes. CMA grads do get a special cord or tassel, but they are listed with the other cords.

  • Volunteers Needed — We will be needing (and asking for) volunteers for the Professional Breakfast, Awards Banquet and upcoming fundraisers. Please contact Cathy Hendrickson to volunteer.

  • Speaker: Linda Robinson on the Genetics of Cancer — Natalie said that they will be taping the presentation since it is occurring on the night before finals begin. It will be posted on the website.
